Killa Natural is more than just a brand, it’s a movement dedicated to sustainable fashion and the empowerment of indigenous and native women in the Peruvian Amazon. Specializing in clothes and home décor products made from naturally dyed fabrics, Killa Natural merges traditional techniques with modern aesthetics to create unique, eco-friendly products.
Over the past 15 years, the Peruvian Amazon has seen a significant migration of its indigenous populations, with a staggering 52% immigration rate. This migration is often driven by a lack of economic opportunities and vulnerability to industrialization pressures. Killa Natural addresses this issue by providing livelihoods to indigenous and native women, enabling them to stay in their
communities and thrive as skilled artisans.
I had the opportunity to attend one of Killa Natural’s workshops and witness the intricate process of natural dyeing, getting a glimpse into the meticulous and eco-friendly method they use.
The process begins with weighing the fabric when dry. It is then washed to remove any impurities. Minerals, such as aluminum, are added to the fabric. The quantity is carefully measured to be 10% of the fabric’s weight. Various plants and flowers are used to achieve vibrant colors. For instance, the Guayabo Plant produces a natural bright yellow tint. Mango leaves are used to create green hues. Curcuma (Turmeric) provides a vibrant orange colour. Nogal gives a brown tint. Red Roses and Onion Peels are also ideal for producing rich colours. And the Hibiscus, depending on the mineral used, can yield blue, purple, or brown colors.
Killa Natural employs a unique technique to achieve a mirror symmetry effect on the fabric, ensuring there are no wrinkles.
Killa Natural’s commitment to sustainability is evident in their production process, which takes up to five years, and in the durability of their products, which can last for several years. By using natural resources efficiently and measuring their carbon footprint, Killa Natural ensures that their fashion is not only slow but also sustainable.
These products are made from natural fabrics like silk, jute, and cotton. When dyed correctly, the colors on these fabrics are long- lasting and do not fade, even with regular washing. The neutral pH of the dyes means that the fabrics can be washed with soap and in washing machines without any risk of color loss, as long as they are air-dried.
The techniques used by Killa Natural are rooted in ancient practices. For example, the Paracas museum showcases clothes that were dyed using similar methods hundreds of years ago, and the colors have remained vibrant to this day. This legacy of tradition is a testament to the effectiveness and beauty of natural dyeing techniques.
Killa Natural is more than a brand; it’s a celebration of culture, tradition, and sustainability. By supporting Killa Natural, you are not only embracing eco-friendly fashion but also empowering indigenous and native women of the Peruvian Amazon. So join us in this journey towards a more sustainable and equitable world, one beautifully dyed fabric at a time!
